Futures
Also known as: Futures Bet, Outright
A futures bet is a wager on a long-term outcome resolved at the end of a season or tournament, such as a league champion, division winner, or season MVP. Futures markets carry high vig but offer large potential payouts.
Futures bets resolve at the end of a long-form season or event. Pre-season Super Bowl champion futures, World Series futures, NBA MVP futures, Heisman futures, and college football conference winners are all common futures markets. They are placed long before the result is known, often months in advance, and the wagered money is locked until resolution.
Futures carry steep vig, often 20-30% hold across all listed outcomes. The reason: books are pricing many simultaneous outcomes, each with low probability, and any pricing imprecision on a longshot would expose them to a massive payout if it hit. So they shade every price, leaving bettors to pay more for each outcome than its true probability would imply.
Worked example. Pre-season NFL Super Bowl futures: 32 teams listed, each priced. Summing the no-vig implied probabilities should give 100%, but the raw implied probabilities across all 32 typically sum to 130-140%. That means 30-40% theoretical hold. Across the most-bet outcomes (Chiefs, 49ers, Eagles in recent seasons), the embedded juice per ticket is severe. The favored teams at +600 might be true 18% probabilities priced at 14.3% implied (after vig), which is a 4-point overpay.
Elite Picks tracks futures markets but doesn’t surface them as primary edge plays. The model can identify mispricings (especially in mid-season futures after major roster moves or injuries when books are slower to reprice), but the high hold and long capital lock-up make futures structurally inferior to per-game prop research for almost all bettors. Hedging an early-season futures ticket as the season progresses is a more common use case than placing fresh tickets.
Example
A bettor takes a team at +1500 to win the Super Bowl before the season starts. A $100 stake returns $1,600 if the team wins, or loses if they don't. The bet is locked until the championship is decided in February.
