Hedge
Also known as: Hedging
A hedge is a second bet placed on the opposite side of an existing wager to lock in profit or reduce loss regardless of outcome. Hedging is a risk-management tool, not an edge-generating strategy.
Hedging means placing a bet on the opposite side of one you already hold, to flatten the payoff distribution. The classic case is a futures ticket that has reached the final stage. The bettor can let the original ride or hedge to guarantee profit at the cost of capping upside.
The math: if your original bet pays P1 on a win and you hedge for stake H at decimal odds D, you net P1 - H if the original wins and (H × (D - 1)) - original-stake if the hedge wins. Solving for H to equalize both outcomes gives the “perfect hedge” stake that locks in equal profit either way.
Worked example. You hold a $50 NBA championship ticket at +2000 on a longshot team. They reach the Finals. Your ticket pays $1000 on a win. The opponent is now -130 in the series. You hedge with $443 at -130: if your team wins, you net $1000 - $443 = $557; if the opponent wins, you net $341 (profit on hedge) - $50 (original stake) = $291. Imperfect symmetric hedge, but both outcomes are now profitable.
Hedging is rarely +EV. The two prices (your original and the hedge market) almost always sum to less than 100% in your favor after both vigs. You’re paying a premium for certainty. The strict-EV play is usually to let positive-EV bets ride. Hedging makes sense when bankroll risk is meaningful (a single ticket represents too large a share of total bankroll) or when life circumstances make the variance unattractive.
Elite Picks treats hedging as a personal-risk decision, not a research signal. The model gives the edge; whether to lock in is up to the bettor’s tolerance.
Example
You bet $100 on a team to win a futures market at +1000. They reach the championship game. You hedge by betting $400 on the opponent at +150. If your original team wins, you net $1000 - $400 = $600. If the opponent wins, you net $600 - $100 = $500.
