Pace

Also known as: Possessions per 48, Pace Factor

Pace is the number of offensive possessions a team averages per game, expressed per 48 minutes in the NBA. Faster pace means more total possessions, more total shots, and inflated counting stats for every player on the floor.

Pace is the rate at which a team generates possessions. NBA league average sits around 99 possessions per 48 minutes. Pace-up teams (Pacers, Hawks historically) run 102-104; pace-down teams (Heat, traditional Spurs) run 95-97. The gap between fastest and slowest is roughly 8-10 possessions per game, which translates to dozens of additional shots and counting stats.

Pace is computed from possessions, which are estimated by summing field goal attempts, 0.44 times free throw attempts, turnovers, and subtracting offensive rebounds. Possessions for both teams in a game are nearly identical; pace is the joint property of both teams playing each other.

Worked example. Player A averages 22 points at 32 minutes for a 100-pace team. Tonight, his team faces a 104-pace opponent. Matchup pace projects to 102. His expected points should scale up roughly 2% (102/100), pushing his projection toward 22.4 even before accounting for matchup quality, rest, and other factors. The prop line at 22.5 might look like a tossup at first glance but the pace adjustment alone moves the projection by half a point.

Elite Picks’ NBA model adjusts every player projection by matchup-implied pace rather than season-average pace. The pace adjustment is small per game but it compounds across a slate of props, and ignoring it leaves obvious EV on the table. Pace matters less in the NFL (possession count is naturally capped around 11-13 drives per side) but matters meaningfully in college basketball, where pace differentials can exceed 20 possessions per game between extremes.

Example

An NBA team averaging 102 possessions per game faces a team averaging 96. The matchup pace projects around 99, meaning both teams will run about 99 possessions, lifting expected totals across every player prop.
