Opening Night NBA Intel
LeBron James opens his 24th season tonight at Madison Square Garden, in his first game for Philadelphia. Before the 7:00 PM ET tip, the Knicks raise their first championship banner since 1973, five months after they swept the Sixers in the second round. Jaylen Brown, traded from Boston in July, makes his Sixers debut too.
At 9:30 PM ET, Oklahoma City visits San Antonio in a rematch of last spring's seven-game West finals, which the Spurs won before falling to New York in the Finals. It is Victor Wembanyama, the reigning Defensive Player of the Year, against two-time MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. Boston at Detroit opens the season at 3:00 PM ET. Here is where the model lands tonight.

Jaylen BrownPHI @ NY7:00 PM ET Brown averaged 38.3 points + rebounds + assists over his last 25 games last season, and he went over 30.5 in 7 of his last 10. The model projects 32.3 tonight, well below that pace and still above the line. New York's defense was 4th-toughest against small forwards last season, the main thing working against him.
Victor WembanyamaOKC @ SA9:30 PM ET Wembanyama averaged 35.0 points + rebounds over his last 10 games last season. The model has him at about 30 minutes tonight, down from the 33 he averaged over his last 25, and Oklahoma City's defense was 5th-toughest against centers last season. The risk is volume: he was taking 20.8 shots a game over his last five, up from 16.6 over his last 25. The model projects 36.1.
Karl-Anthony TownsPHI @ NY7:00 PM ET Towns made 0.8 threes a game over his last five games last season and stayed under 1.5 in 6 of his last 10. His three-point volume fell last season too, with the fewest attempts of his career for most of the year. The model projects 1.0. The risk is the matchup, since Philadelphia allowed the 2nd-most threes to centers last season.
Every number behind tonight's picks comes from last season, and a lot of players open this one on new teams. Expect more variance than usual over each team's first few games, until this season's numbers start to build up. Size your bets with that in mind, and always bet responsibly.
