Season Opener NFL Intel
Seven months after Seattle beat New England in Super Bowl LX, the two teams open the season against each other on a Wednesday, a first in Patriots history. A.J. Brown makes his Patriots debut against a Seattle secondary that lost two starting corners in free agency. Christian Gonzalez signed his extension just in time to shadow Jaxon Smith-Njigba again, the receiver he shut down in that Super Bowl. Sam Darnold and Cooper Kupp headline tonight's props, both leaning on Seattle's offense finding rhythm before New England's defense catches up.

Darnold threw 25 touchdowns in 17 games with Seattle last season, a per-game rate that sits right on this line. New England allowed just 1.5 passing touchdowns a game in 2025, the 9th-fewest passing yards allowed in the league, and the model notes Week 1 passing unders have hit 67% of the time from 2023-25. A season opener against a defense this stingy through the air isn't the spot for Darnold to clear 1.5.
Barner caught 52 passes on 68 targets last season, averaging just over three catches a game while playing 75% of Seattle's snaps. His targets travel only 5.1 yards downfield on average, the kind of easy completions that make three catches a realistic floor rather than a stretch. A tight end that involved, on the field for three of every four snaps, clears a 2.5 number more often than not.
Kupp averaged 37.1 yards a game with Seattle last season, well clear of this 29.5 line. His targets came 8.7 yards downfield on average and he beat his expected yards after catch by half a yard a target, both signs the production wasn't empty volume. New England's pass defense ranked among the league's better units in 2025, but Kupp cleared this number as a per-game average against the field as a whole.
Seattle is favored by 3.5 with a 44.5 total, a number that fits two offenses that each scored over 28 points a game last season. Seattle breaks in rookie Jadarian Price after Kenneth Walker III left for Kansas City and Zach Charbonnet landed on PUP, and Nick Emmanwori and Ty Okada are both questionable in a secondary that already lost two starters this offseason. Kickoff is 8:20 PM ET at Lumen Field, NBC's season opener.
