Total

Also known as: Over/Under, O/U

A total (also called over/under) is a market that prices the combined final score of both teams in a game. Bettors wager on whether the actual total will finish over or under the posted number.

The total prices the joint scoring output of both teams in a single number. It is one of the three main bet types alongside moneyline and spread, and it is the cleanest market for many statistical betting approaches because it depends on pace, efficiency, and matchup dynamics rather than on which team wins.

Totals shift with everything that affects expected scoring: weather (wind kills NFL passing offense and depresses totals), injuries (a star defender out raises the total), pace (two pace-up teams produce higher totals), recent form, and rest. Books update totals continuously through the day; sharp action and news both move them.

Worked example. NFL game: total opens at 47.5. Twelve hours before kickoff, wind forecast jumps from 8 mph to 22 mph. Books reprice totals downward; within an hour the total drops to 44.5. A bettor who had a “lean under” on the original 47.5 captured 3 points of value by betting early. A bettor late to the news now faces a tougher 44.5 line and likely has no edge or a smaller one.

Elite Picks’ game-level model produces a full predicted score distribution for both teams, allowing it to price every alternate total and not just the main line. The model is particularly valuable on totals because pace, efficiency, and matchup defensive ratings combine cleanly through pace-adjusted offensive efficiency, a well-studied framework. When the model’s predicted total diverges from the posted total by 2+ points with reasonable confidence, the prop is flagged.

Example

An NBA total of 224.5 (-110/-110) means the over wins if the two teams combine for 225 or more points and the under wins if they combine for 224 or fewer.
