Also known as: Daily Fantasy Sports, Daily Fantasy
DFS is a contest format where users assemble lineups of real athletes under a salary cap and compete based on those athletes' real-game statistical performance. DraftKings and FanDuel are the dominant DFS operators in the US.
DFS (daily fantasy sports) is the lineup-construction game where users pick a roster of real players, constrained by a salary cap, and earn points based on those players’ actual on-field stats that day. Unlike season-long fantasy leagues, DFS resets every day or every slate. It is regulated as a game of skill in most US jurisdictions, separate from sports betting.
The two-operator dominance (DraftKings, FanDuel) means most DFS analysis tooling is built around their salary structures and scoring rules. Smaller operators (PrizePicks, Underdog, Sleeper) have grown by pivoting to pick-em formats that resemble player props more than traditional lineup contests. Pick-em DFS is regulatorily contested in some states because of its similarity to parlays.
Worked example. A DFS user enters a $20 NBA contest. Their lineup includes a star player at a $11,000 salary and a value play at $4,500. The star scores 50 fantasy points; the value play scores 35. The total lineup hits 270 points, which finishes in the top 10% of the contest’s 100,000 entries and wins $80. Across many contests, edge comes from identifying mispriced players (high projected points per dollar of salary) and constructing lineups that correlate properly with game scripts.
Many of the same modeling inputs apply to both DFS and prop betting: projected stat distributions, usage rate, pace, matchup splits. Elite Picks’ player projections are usable for DFS lineup construction even though the primary product target is prop research. The math underneath is the same; only the output formatting differs.
Example
A DFS user picks 9 MLB players within a $50,000 salary cap. Each player earns fantasy points for hits, runs, RBIs, and pitching stats. The top finishers in a paid contest win cash prizes.
