Steam Move
Also known as: Steam, Line Steam
A steam move is a sudden, synchronized line movement across multiple sportsbooks within a short window, triggered by heavy sharp action or new information. It signals that smart money has moved the market.
A steam move is the market’s response to a high-conviction signal. Sharp syndicates often place coordinated bets across multiple books at the same time, and books that recognize the activity move their lines almost immediately to avoid stale prices. The synchronized timing across operators is what distinguishes steam from ordinary line drift.
Steam can be triggered by sharp action alone (a syndicate places bets at 12 books in two minutes) or by news (a star player is ruled out, weather report changes the total). News-driven steam is often slower and more variable across books; sharp-driven steam tends to be tighter and more synchronized.
Worked example. Sunday morning NFL slate: a game total sits at 47.5 across the major books. At 11:43 AM, weather reports forecast 30 mph winds at kickoff. By 11:45 AM, totals at DraftKings, FanDuel, BetMGM, and Caesars have all moved to 45.5. The 2-point synchronized move is a steam move triggered by weather. A bettor who saw 47.5 in their app at 11:42 and bet the under captured 2 points of value; a bettor who tried to bet at 11:46 was too late and would have to accept the new 45.5 line.
Steam-chasing (placing a bet to follow a steam move) is a real strategy at books that haven’t moved yet. It requires accounts at multiple books and fast execution. Most retail bettors can’t chase steam effectively, but they can use steam signals as confirmation when their own model agrees with the direction of the move. Elite Picks flags steam moves in the line-movement panel as supplementary signal alongside the model projection.
Example
An NBA spread sits at -3 (-110) at five major books for hours. Within a 90-second window, all five books move to -3.5 (-110) simultaneously. That synchronized move is a steam move, indicating sharp money or breaking lineup news.
